About
Nestled in the vibrant heart of Washington, DC, ASTU KITFO BAR AND RESTAURANT stands as a culinary gem, dedicated to delivering an authentic Ethiopian dining experience. Located at 3013 Georgia Ave NW, this establishment invites patrons to explore the rich flavors and traditions of Ethiopian cuisine, all while providing a warm, home-like ambiance.
The moment you walk in, you are enveloped by the delightful aromas of traditional spices. The decor resonates with Ethiopian culture, creating an inviting space that feels like a cultural journey. As Nancy Craige perfectly described, it offers "a homey comfortable atmosphere" ideal for both veterans of Ethiopian cuisine and newcomers eager to embark on a flavorful adventure.
One of the standout dishes is the Asfu Kitfo, a sumptuous platter that showcases not only the signature kitfo—well-seasoned ground beef—but also a variety of greens and meats, making for a vibrant feast. Guests rave about the meat combo platter, like Claire Adelynn, who admired its stunning presentation and array of unique, colorful dishes. From the rich and spicy Quanta Firfir to the tender ASTU beef tibs, each dish tells a story of flavor and culture.
Adding to this experience is the impeccable service. The staff at ASTU KITFO BAR AND RESTAURANT is known for their attentiveness and eagerness to share the nuances of their offerings. As monsta minds entertainment noted, the staff clearly takes pride in the culinary heritage of Ethiopia, making the dining experience not just a meal but a cultural event.
Moreover, the restaurant excels in its drink offerings, notably the rich and bold Ethiopian coffee, which has won over even the most discerning coffee aficionados. The atmosphere, enhanced by traditional music, sets the perfect tone for an enjoyable meal, whether it’s a casual lunch or a family gathering.
In summary, ASTU KITFO BAR AND RESTAURANT is not merely a place to eat; it’s an immersive experience that connects you with the essence of Ethiopian culture through its exceptional cuisine and warm hospitality. Whether you're exploring your roots or discovering Ethiopian food for the first time, this restaurant promises an unforgettable dining experience that leaves you yearning for more.

“ This restaurant is amazing if you want a homey comfortable atmosphere looking to explore authentic ethiopian culture or dive deeper into your ethiopian roots. Very great music, high quality drinks, amazing price for the deliciousness of the food. We ordered the Asfu Kitfo which came as a big platter with kitfo, greens, different other meats and many more. Amazing host and staff and great coffee as well. Cannot recommend this place enough! 10/10 ”
“ I had an absolutely incredible experience here! The staff was extremely attentive and courteous. The decor was beautiful. The location was clean and the music was catchy and set to a very conversational volume. I ordered the small meat combo platter with a coffee and was astounded by presentation with which it was received. The food itself was excellent and the combo platter was very well varied. It felt like the perfect sampler yet was well more than ample as a full meal. Each dish was colorfully unique, though my favorite portion was the Quanta Firfir which was rich and spicy. Finally, the coffee was outstanding... and I am a coffee snob. I would recommend this place to Ethiopian enthusiasts and new comers alike! ”
“ Traditional Ethiopian eats, great presentation of what it would be like to eat in Ethiopia. The spices really come through on the cubed beef (had the ASTU beef tibs). And I really like the spiciness level, it got me good, in a wonderful way. ”
“ OMG the best experience ever! My food was so fresh. We shared a veggie combo plate. Delicious and beautiful. Strong tea and quiet surroundings, just what we were looking for, for an economical lunch. ”
“ The service and atmosphere takes you to Africa. The scents the sights the feelings takes you out of DC for a little bit. The service was awesome, very attentive and alot of time spent explaining the various dishes as well as answering our millions of questions. The food tasted really great. If you have never had Injera Bread before, its the texture essentially of a not too fluffy pancake with a slightly sour taste, hope that helps. It was our first time so we went with an open mind and open pallets ready to taste the food in it's authenticity and its really unique, cannot be compared to anything else, you have to like it for what its is. All in all if you're up for a cultural experience head over. Parking is street parking, if you can find in the streets around the restaurant. Our meal was the meat combo so we could taste the various entrees all in one place. There were yellow split peas, red lentils, beef with jalapenos, brown screwed beef, stewed chicken, chicken with a boiled egg, cheese (White stuff in pic) and kitfo (Semi cooked well seasoned ground beef) bottom right of the pic. ”
“ This was our first time trying Ethiopian food. From the moment we walked in we were in love with the people. And then the food came and we threw caution to the wind and dove in. You eat with your hands and don’t get plates or napkins (until the very end) I recommend a cup of coffee. We tried the largo combo which was plenty for 5 of us and a great way to try a good variety of meats 5 stars all the way around. The restaurant is in its first year and deserves the support of the community and those just passing thru ”
“ We went there for dinner prior to going to a soccer game, and we enjoyed our food immensely. All the food items were great and delicious. The owner is friendly and nice and turned on the AC as per our request as it was really hot on that day. It is definitely on the expensive side as all the side orders were expensive and we had to order the items a few times as it wasn't enough for us. That is something to be aware of. Other than that, the food, service, and ambiance were good. I definitely recommend this restaurant for Ethiopian food. ”
“ I went to this restaurant for lunch while on a school break. Honestly, the food is a lot for few dollars (25). I thought I was given food for three. The atmosphere is so welcoming: music playing in the background, and happy, smiling, welcoming waiters engaging you in positive conversation. I highly recommend this restaurant. ”
